U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the population of older adults continues to rise as younger groups decline in number. From 2020 through 2024, there was a 13% rise in Americans age 65 and over, while the number of people under 18 dropped by 1.7%. Over the past 100 years, the nation’s older adult population grew significantly, from 4.9 million in 1920 to exceeding 61 million by 2024.
A study from 2021 indicates that close to half—about 28 million—of adults age 65 and older could need long-term services and support, with projections that more than one-third will likely require nursing home care at some point.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
