U.S. Senator Mike Crapo (R-Idaho) has expressed support for President Donald Trump’s recent executive order aimed at ensuring equal access to banking services for all Americans. The order, signed on August 7, 2025, addresses concerns about banks denying or restricting services based on political affiliations, religious beliefs, or lawful business activities.
Senator Crapo, who has served as both a member and former Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, has previously advocated for broader access to financial services and an even playing field in the industry.
According to the executive order, bank regulators during the Biden Administration allegedly pressured financial institutions to exclude certain individuals and businesses from banking services due to their personal beliefs or activities.
“I have spent many years challenging banks and federal activities that employ tactics to cut off credit and capital services to law-abiding businesses if they do not comply with the bank’s ‘preferences,’” Senator Crapo said. “Today, President Donald Trump is taking steps to stop these underhanded methods of advancing a political agenda. I look forward to continuing to work with this Administration to repeal harmful practices that hinder law-abiding businesses from accessing full-scale banking resources.”
The issue of “debanking” has been a topic of discussion in recent years as lawmakers debate how best to balance regulatory oversight with fair access for consumers and businesses.
