The Idaho Vandals women’s basketball team narrowly missed an upset against the Cal Golden Bears in Berkeley on Wednesday, falling 68-61. The loss moves both teams to a record of 8-3 for the season.
Idaho played without one of its key contributors, Debora Dos Santos, but managed to stay close throughout the game. The Vandals led 56-55 early in the fourth quarter after an 11-2 run, which included contributions from multiple players and forced Cal to call a timeout with just over six minutes remaining.
Despite this surge, Cal responded with an 8-0 run and maintained control for the rest of the game. Gardner hit a jumper with just over a minute left to bring Idaho within four points, but the team was unable to close the gap further.
Idaho outrebounded Cal 41-36 and won the turnover battle by forcing 14 turnovers while committing only 10. Gardner recorded her first career double-double, marking the third such performance by a Vandal this season. Idaho also outscored Cal 16-15 in the final quarter.
The Vandals will next travel to Logan, Utah to face Utah State Aggies. That game is scheduled for noon PT and will be available on the Mountain West Network.
