Senator Mike Crapo, chair of the Senate Committee on Finance, said on April 16 that this year’s tax filing season has brought historically high refunds and faster payments to millions of Americans. Crapo made these remarks during a Senate Finance Committee hearing with Internal Revenue Service CEO Frank Bisignano.

The topic is important because it affects tens of millions of families and job creators who are experiencing significant tax relief due to the Working Families Tax Cuts. The changes aim to provide more support for middle-class taxpayers and prevent potential tax increases.

Bisignano said, “Thanks to the legislation signed into law, we are seeing historically high refunds and adoption of the President’s key tax initiatives at levels that surpassed expectations.” He added, “I think it’s actually exceeding expectations. More than eighty million Americans have had refunds—that’s the most ever. So, when we think about the refunds, we paid out 16 percent more. … When you take all refunds, 90 percent of them have been paid within 21 days. Larger refunds to more people quicker.”

Crapo explained that if the Trump-era tax cuts from 2017 had expired, taxpayers earning less than $400,000 would have faced a $2.6 trillion increase over ten years. He said Republicans not only made those cuts permanent but also expanded relief through new provisions in the Working Families Tax Cuts.

Crapo also pointed out that by April 10 this year, about 120 million returns were received by the IRS and around 80 million refunds were issued—millions more than last year—with average refund amounts rising by roughly eleven percent to over $3,400 each. Total refund payouts reached almost $274 billion. New deductions for tips, overtime pay, car-loan interest and senior benefits were claimed on over fifty-three million returns.

Bisignano provided further details: “Thirty million [have claimed] the senior benefit. Six million filers have claimed no tax on tips, twenty-five million filers have had no tax on overtime, and one million for the car loan deduction… The largest amount of refunds—80 million going out and over $280 billion in refunds—we have ten percent more people receiving a refund this year…” He noted five million Trump Accounts opened for dependents so far this year.

Crapo has advocated for Idahoans on issues like responsible forest management and natural resource protection according to his official website. He grew up in Idaho Falls where he raised five children with his wife Susan according to his official website. Before serving as Senator he represented Idaho’s Second Congressional District in three terms in Congress according to his official website.

Looking ahead, both lawmakers emphasized ongoing efforts to ensure efficient delivery of future relief measures.
