Senator Mike Crapo, a senior member of the U.S. Senate and ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee, publicly commented on three federal nominations in a series of posts dated July 31, 2025. The tweets highlight his views on the qualifications and potential contributions of Derek Theurer, Mike Stuart, and Gus Chiarello to key government positions.
In his first post, Crapo stated: “Derek Theurer’s extensive Hill experience and commitment to prioritizing open and timely communication with Congress will be critical in his role as Deputy Under Secretary for Legislative Affairs at @USTreasury, if confirmed.” (July 31, 2025).
On the same day, Crapo also addressed another nominee: “Mike Stuart’s experience prosecuting cases related to the opioid crisis and Medicaid fraud demonstrates a strong commitment to protect patients and root out waste and abuse in health care systems. This experience will make him an invaluable asset as @HHSgov General Counsel.” (July 31, 2025).
Crapo further expressed support for Gus Chiarello’s nomination by writing: “If confirmed as Assistant Secretary for Financial Resources for @HHSGov, Gus Chiarello’s experience in consumer protection, regulatory reform, competition and antitrust issues will make him a valuable addition to the HHS team.” (July 31, 2025).
These endorsements come amid ongoing scrutiny over federal appointments that impact oversight of financial regulation and healthcare administration. As ranking member of the Senate Finance Committee—a body responsible for matters related to taxation, revenue measures generally, Social Security programs, Medicare, Medicaid, and other health programs—Crapo plays a significant role in reviewing such nominations.
The nominees referenced by Crapo are under consideration for positions at the U.S. Department of Treasury (@USTreasury) and the Department of Health & Human Services (@HHSgov), agencies central to economic policy and public health oversight.
