The City of Lewiston announced on Apr. 17 that night work will begin next week as part of the Snake River Avenue improvements between Southway Avenue and 11th Avenue. Drivers should expect periodic lane closures and flagging operations throughout the project, with crews aiming to keep two-way traffic moving in one lane each direction whenever possible.

This construction is being completed in multiple phases, with daytime work having started on April 13 from 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The overall timeline for the project runs from April through October, during which traffic patterns may shift as different phases progress.

According to the city, “We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we work to improve this important corridor and keep both the public and construction crews safe.” The initial phase focuses on stormwater drainage system installation and roadway reconstruction beginning at the south end near Southway Avenue roundabout, progressing north past 11th Avenue. Two-way traffic will be maintained with one lane in each direction during this phase.

From spring through fall, workers will widen Snake River Avenue into three lanes—one through-lane each way plus a shared center turn-lane—and add curb, gutter, concrete sidewalk, ADA-compliant pedestrian ramps, improved stormwater drainage infrastructure, and other enhancements. Final paving, striping, and signing are scheduled for late in the year.

The project has been planned since 2014 by the City of Lewiston working alongside Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) and Local Highway Technical Assistance Council (LHTAC), with J-U-B Engineers providing engineering services. As construction continues, J-U-B Engineers will coordinate directly with nearby businesses and property owners while posting updates online.
