Idaho Track and Field closed its outdoor regular season on May 6 at the Whitworth Last Chance Meet in Spokane, highlighted by a standout performance from Sturgis in the javelin. Sturgis set a new facility record with a throw of 73.21 meters (240’2″), moving to 17th nationally and second in Idaho program history.
The event marked an important milestone for the Vandals as they prepare for the upcoming Big Sky Championships. UI’s Director of Track and Field said, “We had a great result in our Last Chance meet today up in Spokane. Our teams are peaking well, and now we shift our focus to the Big Sky Championships, which start next week.”
Sturgis’s mark surpassed his previous personal record by nearly two meters and extended his lead at the top of the conference performance list. Tengattini also achieved his collegiate best with a shot put of 17.69 meters, placing him fourth in the Big Sky standings ahead of next week’s championship.
Idaho’s throwers continued their strong showing as another athlete recorded a career-best javelin throw of 45.46 meters (149’1″), securing fourth place among conference competitors and joining another teammate within the women’s top-five rankings.
Three Vandals posted season-best times in the men’s 800-meter race: senior led with a time of 1:50.01, followed by another runner’s personal record of 1:50.49, while a third finished at 1:55.84.
Looking ahead, Idaho will turn its attention to competing at the Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championship starting May 13 in Portland.
