Senior athlete Sturgis was named the Big Sky Conference Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for the third time this season, according to a May 11 announcement. The recognition follows his record-breaking performance at last Wednesday’s Whitworth Last Chance Meet.

This award highlights Sturgis’s continued success in javelin throwing during the outdoor campaign. His latest throw reached 73.21 meters (240’2″), setting a new facility record and moving him to 17th place nationally and second in Idaho Vandals history. The mark surpassed his previous personal best of 71.32 meters (234’0″), achieved at April’s Beach Invitational, and further solidified his lead atop the Big Sky performance list as he heads into this week’s conference championship.

Sturgis, who is from Spokane, has now earned three weekly honors during this outdoor track and field season, tying with Weber State’s Wyatt Larkins for most awards by a male athlete in 2026. He has been recognized as the top javelin thrower in the conference throughout the season.

He will enter the upcoming 2026 Big Sky Outdoor Track and Field Championship as a favorite in his event. The championship meet is scheduled to begin Wednesday, May 13, in Portland.

The outcome of Sturgis’s participation could have implications for both his standing within collegiate athletics and Idaho Vandals’ overall performance at this major conference event.
