University of Idaho alumnus and space propulsion expert Tom Mueller will give a public keynote address during the College of Engineering’s Engineering Design EXPO, according to an April 30 announcement. The event is scheduled for Friday, May 1, at the ICCU Arena on the Moscow campus.
Mueller is recognized for his work in rocket propulsion and as a founding member of SpaceX. His appearance at the EXPO highlights the university’s connection to leading figures in engineering and aims to inspire students and attendees with insights from his career.
The keynote address will take place from 12:30 p.m. to 1:15 p.m., following a morning showcase where engineering students present projects developed through the Interdisciplinary Senior Capstone Design Program. This program has been recognized by the National Academy of Engineering for its emphasis on real-world experience in undergraduate education.
Mueller led development of several key engines at SpaceX, including Merlin, Draco, and SuperDraco engines used in Falcon rockets and Dragon spacecraft. He currently serves as CEO of Impulse Space, a company focused on chemical propulsion systems and orbital transfer vehicles.
The EXPO is free and open to the public from 9 a.m. until noon before Mueller’s keynote. Attendees can view student projects sponsored by industry partners or university departments. Industry representatives are also invited to judge capstone projects, while educators may bring their classrooms to learn about advances made by University of Idaho students.
Media interviews with Tom Mueller or participating students can be arranged through Alexiss Turner at alexisst@uidaho.edu or by calling 208-885-7511.
