In the first quarter of 2026, Valley Vista Care Center of St. Maries received an overall rating of 1 out of 5, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reports. This placed it below the Idaho nursing home average of 3.2 for the same time frame.

During that period, the center operated 74 beds, ranking three fewer than Idaho’s average for the quarter. Valley Vista cared for an average of 51.2 residents each day.

Valley Vista Care Center of St. Maries incurred $43,843 in fines and served one penalty as of the first quarter of 2026.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the nation’s older population is rising while younger demographic groups shrink. Between 2020 and 2024, Americans age 65 and above surged by 13%, as those younger than 18 declined by 1.7%. Older adults in the U.S. have increased dramatically in the last century, growing from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 study indicated that almost half of that age group, about 28 million people, might need long-term services and support. The research further projected over a third may eventually require nursing home care.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
